On 28 August 1998, American pop artist Peter Max worked on a portrait of Princess Diana in New York. The session formed part of a global internet charity event involving the American Red Cross, British Red Cross and Red Crescent Foundation.
Across four photographs, the portrait develops from close brushwork to broader views of Max beside the canvas. Diana's face is rendered through the vivid colour and graphic lines associated with his pop-art portraits.
The sequence captures both the act of painting and the finished direction of the work, bringing a famous artistic style to an international charitable collaboration.
