On 4 November 2001, guests arrived at the Odeon Leicester Square in London for the premiere of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Twenty-five years later, this selection revisits the occasion through photographs of Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters, Richard Griffiths, director Chris Columbus, Cate Blanchett and Cher.
Coltrane poses in a purple suit beside a fellow guest in a silver dress. Walters wears a green velvet trouser suit, while Griffiths pairs a dark suit with a red tie and matching pocket square. Columbus smiles towards the cameras in a dark jacket over a burgundy open-neck shirt.
The guest photographs add two different looks: Blanchett in a black coat and heels, and Cher in a sparkling gold-toned coat with patterned trousers. Photographers, spectators and premiere barriers fill the backgrounds, placing the portraits within a busy Leicester Square arrival scene.
The original archive captions identify the Odeon Leicester Square premiere and date all six photographs to 4 November 2001. The first film brought Harry Potter to the cinema in 2001; this selection records its London premiere night. All photographs are credited to Big Pictures Archive.
