In the final week of August 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, was photographed on a Mediterranean journey that moved from the waters off Portofino to Sardinia and then Paris.

The sequence begins on 25 August. Diana sits alone at the end of a yacht's diving board above the sea near Portofino, wearing a turquoise swimsuit. The spare composition became one of the defining photographs of her final summer.

Other frames widen the view to the yacht and to Dodi Al Fayed. On 30 August, archive photographs place the couple in Sardinia before their flight to Le Bourget airport in Paris.

The final photographs in this gallery show Diana and Dodi leaving the Ritz after dinner. Diana died later that night following a car crash in Paris.

This picture story uses only contemporary photographs from those days. It contains no imagery from the crash, funeral, memorials, investigations or inquest.
