Ravi Shankar was photographed on 13 May 1998 receiving the Polar Music Prize, an award he shared that year with Ray Charles. The 7th ceremony took place at Berwaldhallen in Stockholm, with a banquet following at the Grand Hôtel.
The sitar player, composer and teacher was honoured for nearly six decades of work as a performer and explorer of his country's art music. He received the prize directly from HM King Carl XVI Gustaf during the Berwaldhallen ceremony.
Shankar's daughter Anoushka, herself a sitar player, travelled with him to Stockholm and performed his composition "Tilak Shyam - 3" at the ceremony. Before the event, the Laureates had met with Anders Öhman at a press conference.
Earlier that year, Shankar's 1997 album Chants of India, produced by his friend George Harrison, had been released on Angel Records.
